5 Things to Consider When Using Self-Storage

April 22, 2021

When it comes to renting a storage unit, there are plenty of things to consider. Not all storage units are the same, and they are much more than just a large container or garage space. It is important to think about elements such as the location of the unit and the type of access it has, as well as what you will be using it for and any extra elements you may need. Here are just five things to consider when using self-storage.

Location

Consider where your storage unit is going to be. If you are going to use it regularly, then it may be more useful to rent a unit closer to your home so that you don’t have to travel far every time you want to access it. There are plenty of locations, so you will be able to find one that works for you, one that has the kinds of units you need. For example, just looking at Miami storage locations will bring up plenty of options in that area, allowing you to search through and find the most appropriate option.

Access

Some storage units will allow you to have 24-hour access, meaning you can go into your unit whenever you need to. This gives you ultimate freedom and accessibility, as you don’t need to worry about the location being closed when you need to enter or return something to the unit. Furthermore, units used for vehicle storage can benefit from drive-up access, allowing you to drive straight into the unit and park like it is a garage.

Use

Think about what you will be using your unit for. Are you planning on moving home and need somewhere to store your boxes, or do you need a space to securely keep your car or RV if you do not have a garage at your home? Knowing what you are going to use your unit for will help guide your search, as not every unit is the same. Some items are not allowed to be kept inside a storage unit, and this also may vary from location to location.

Size

The size of your unit will also depend on what you plan to keep in there. For example, a 10×10 unit is perfect for the contents of around two bedrooms plus a living room or dining room, but will not be large enough to store a car. Make sure you are not paying for a larger space than you need by planning what you want to store and choosing the correct sizing.

Climate Control

Did you know that you can get climate-controlled units? Some materials, such as metal and fabric, can be damaged by changes in temperature and humidity, so climate-controlled storage units can help to protect these items and maintain their quality.

Knowing what you want to store before you rent a unit can help inform your search and narrow down the options when it comes to selecting the right kind of unit.
