Futurists are not expected to predict exactly what the workplace will look like five or ten years from now. Their real value lies in noticing signals early and asking what those signals could mean if they continue to grow.

Many of the workplace trends that once sounded experimental are now becoming part of everyday business. Artificial intelligence is moving into routine workflows. Wearable devices are beginning to challenge the screen as our main connection to digital information. Distributed teams are changing how companies communicate and make decisions. At the same time, human skills such as judgment, adaptability, and communication are becoming more important rather than less.

For leaders, these developments are worth watching not as separate technology trends, but as signs of a broader change in how work is organized and performed.

AI Is Becoming Part of the Everyday Workflow

For several years, companies treated artificial intelligence as something that belonged to specialist teams or a small number of clearly defined use cases. That distinction is becoming harder to maintain.

AI is increasingly built into the tools employees already use for writing, research, analysis, customer support, coding, and administration. Instead of deliberately deciding to “use AI” for a particular task, many workers now encounter it throughout the normal course of their day.

SHRM’s 2026 workplace research found that 41% of workers surveyed were already using AI in their jobs. In separate research among CEOs, 40% identified adopting AI as one of their leading organizational priorities for the coming year.

The more interesting question for leaders is therefore no longer simply whether their organization should adopt AI. It is how work should change once AI becomes readily available.

That includes deciding where human review is essential, which tasks are appropriate for automation, how employees should verify AI-generated information, and which skills people will need when routine parts of their jobs can be completed much faster.

Organizations that treat AI only as a cost-saving tool may miss the larger shift. The opportunity is not simply to perform the same work faster, but to reconsider which parts of the work deserve people’s time in the first place.

Wearable Technology Is Changing the Interface Between People and Information

For decades, digital work has largely meant looking at a screen.

That model works reasonably well at a desk. It becomes much less convenient when someone is repairing equipment, inspecting a site, moving through a warehouse, training outdoors, or completing any other task that requires their hands and attention.

Wearable technology offers a different approach. Instead of requiring someone to stop what they are doing and look down at a device, information can increasingly travel with them.

Smart glasses are one of the clearest examples of this shift. IDC expects global smart-glasses shipments to reach 13.6 million units in 2026, an increase of 41.4% from the previous year, making the category one of the fastest-growing wearable form factors.

The useful applications are often surprisingly ordinary. A field worker can document what they see without holding a camera. A technician can access instructions while keeping both hands on a task. Someone travelling between locations can capture information without repeatedly reaching for a phone.

Consumer products are also helping normalize the technology. Devices such as Oakley sunglasses with camera show how cameras, audio, and AI-enabled features can increasingly be incorporated into familiar objects rather than requiring people to carry another dedicated device.

That is what makes wearables particularly interesting from a futurist perspective. The long-term change may be less about one specific pair of smart glasses and more about the disappearance of the visible “computer” as the place where digital work happens.

For business leaders, this raises practical questions. Which employees would benefit from hands-free access to information? Which workflows could become easier if documentation happened automatically? And where would wearable technology create privacy, security, or governance concerns that need to be addressed first?

Distributed Work Is Becoming an Organizational Design Question

Remote work is often discussed as a debate about where employees should spend their week.

That framing is too narrow.

The more lasting change is the growth of organizations whose people do not necessarily work in the same location, at the same time, or even in the same country. Once that becomes normal, simply recreating office practices through video calls stops working particularly well.

Distributed teams need information to be easier to find. Decisions need to be documented. Employees need to know what they are responsible for without attending every conversation that led to the decision.

This is why asynchronous communication, shared documentation, project-management platforms, cloud-based collaboration, and AI-generated meeting summaries have become increasingly important.

The technology itself is only half of the story.

A company can buy every collaboration platform available and still run badly as a distributed organization. What matters is whether its management practices have evolved alongside those tools.

For leaders, that may mean being clearer about outcomes rather than hours worked, reducing unnecessary meetings, documenting important decisions, and creating ways for people in different time zones to contribute without always being online together.

The organizations that adapt well to distributed work will not necessarily be those with the most technology. They will be those that redesign their working habits around the reality that not everyone is sitting in the same room.

Human Skills Become More Valuable as Technology Improves

There is an understandable temptation to think that increasingly capable AI will make human skills less important.

The opposite may happen in many roles.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that employers expect 39% of workers’ core skills to change by 2030. AI and big data lead the list of rapidly growing technical skills, but creative thinking, resilience, flexibility, leadership, analytical thinking, and lifelong learning also remain important.

That combination matters.

Knowing how to use an AI system may become increasingly ordinary. Knowing when its answer is incomplete, misleading, inappropriate, or simply wrong is much harder to automate.

The same applies to leadership. AI can summarize a difficult conversation, but it cannot take responsibility for resolving the conflict. It can produce several strategic options, but someone still has to decide which risks the organization is willing to take.

As technology handles more routine cognitive work, judgment becomes more visible.

This creates a different challenge for employers. Training cannot stop at teaching employees how to use new tools. Organizations also need to develop the skills that allow people to question those tools, communicate decisions, work through uncertainty, and adapt when today’s technology is replaced by something better.

In that sense, technical and human capability are becoming more closely connected, not further apart.

The Bigger Shift Is How These Technologies Work Together

It is tempting to look at AI, wearables, distributed work, and changing skills as four separate trends.

In practice, they reinforce one another.

A distributed employee may use AI to summarize a meeting they could not attend. A field technician may access that information through a wearable interface rather than a laptop. An AI system may provide a recommendation, while an experienced employee decides whether it makes sense in the real-world situation in front of them.

The workplace that emerges from these technologies is therefore unlikely to be simply “more automated.”

It may instead be more fluid.

Information will follow people rather than remain tied to particular devices. Teams will collaborate without always being present at the same time. AI will handle more routine work, while employees spend more of their attention on decisions, exceptions, relationships, and judgment.

This also means leaders need to be careful about adopting technology in isolation.

Buying an AI platform without changing workflows produces limited value. Introducing wearables without addressing privacy creates new problems. Allowing distributed work without improving documentation creates confusion. Automating routine tasks without developing employees’ higher-level skills can leave an organization technologically advanced but operationally weak.

The tools matter, but the system around them matters more.

The most useful futurist thinking is rarely about predicting a particular device or technology. It is about noticing when the assumptions underneath work are beginning to change.

AI is becoming an everyday collaborator rather than an occasional tool. Wearable interfaces are beginning to reduce our dependence on screens. Distributed work is forcing organizations to rethink how information and decisions move. And as technology takes on more routine tasks, judgment, adaptability, communication, and other distinctly human capabilities are becoming increasingly valuable.

None of these shifts will happen at exactly the same pace in every organization.

The advantage for leaders is recognizing them early enough to experiment thoughtfully. That means asking not only which technologies to adopt, but how those technologies should change the way people work, learn, communicate, and make decisions.

That is ultimately where the futurist perspective becomes useful: not in knowing exactly what comes next, but in preparing an organization before the next change feels obvious to everyone.
